5 Tips to Clean Your Gas Oven

Last Updated on August 15, 2022 by

We all know how much of a hassle it is to clean our gas ovens. However, by delaying cleaning, we’re not only adding more dirt and grime to our gas stoves, but we’re also increasing the chances of our gas ovens catching on fire.

This is why it’s important to clean not only your gas ovens but also get a gas safety check every 12 months to ensure their safety. After the gas check, you’ll be given a gas certificate that confirms the safety of your gas oven.

If you want to have a clean and spotless gas oven, then just follow these 5 tips on how to clean your gas ovens:

1.     Baking Soda

One of the most common and cheap ways to clean your gas oven is baking soda. It is also known as the all-purpose cleaner because it can easily get rid of persistent food stains.

This is because baking soda is an alkaline, which helps nullify the acidity of grease stains, which allows you to remove the stains without much difficulty. All you need is 4 tablespoons of baking soda with some water or vinegar in a spray bottle, and you’re good to go.

Now, after that comes the cleaning part, many of you may think that the cleaning process will be easy, but you’re mistaken. It may take you an entire day to clean your gas oven because of how stubborn the stains might be, especially if they’re burnt stains.

There are 2 methods that you can use to clean your gas oven, one is using the spray bottle with the water or vinegar and baking soda solution, and the other is using damp baking soda as a paste.

The spray bottle method can be used for stains that can be removed a bit more easily from inside the gas oven, whereas the paste method is used when stains are too dry or burnt to come off by using the spray bottle method.

2.     Salt

If you want to remove harsh stains and spots and stop them from hardening and setting in your gas oven in a way that doesn’t require too much effort from you, then all you need is 1 cup of baking soda and 1/3 cup of salt mixed together.

After using your gas oven, spray water on the inside of the oven and then sprinkle the mixture of salt and baking soda over the water. Repeat the same process over any stain that you see in your oven and leave it on overnight.

In the morning, remove all of the residues from the gas oven with the help of hot water and soap. You’ll notice that the stains and spots on the gas oven from the day before will be gone.

3.     Water and Ammonia

Another way to clean your gas oven without spending your money on expensive cleaning products is by using water and ammonia.

The first step to take when using this method is to heat your gas oven to the temperature of 150◦F. During the process of heating, take a pot of water and start boiling it. Turn off the oven once the temperature reaches 150◦F.

The next step is to take any type of baking dish or oven-safe container and pour 1 cup of ammonia into it. After that, place the dish containing ammonia inside the oven on the top rack and the pot of hot water on the lowest rack, and then close the door.

Leave both of the containers in the oven overnight. When you wake up in the morning, take out the pot of now room temperature water and the dish containing ammonia from inside the oven.

Once you’ve gotten rid of the water but kept the ammonia aside for later use, you can remove the racks from inside the oven and leave its door open to let some air out for about 15 minutes.

After the 15 minutes are done, you can take the ammonia that you kept aside and add a quart of warm water and about 4-5 tablespoons of dish soap in it. The last step is to grab a dishwashing sponge, dip it into the ammonia mixture, and thoroughly wipe down every area, nook, and corner that might have a spot or stain.

4.     Free Fume Commercial Cleaners

Using baking soda may be considered as the best option to clean a gas oven; however, many of you may not have the luxury of dedicating an entire day to clean your gas oven using baking soda.

If you’re looking for a way to clean your gas oven that doesn’t require you to dedicate an entire day and helps you to remove stains thoroughly, then just use a store-bought commercial oven cleaning product. They contain baking soda as the main ingredient; just remember to wear gloves before using them as they also contain chemicals.

5.     Don’t Use the Self-Cleaning Option

A lot of people may know that most gas ovens come with a self-cleaning option. This self-cleaning option is supposed to help remove grease stains and dirt from inside the oven by heating it.

However, this would only bring more damage than benefit because the temperature after heating the oven would be over 1000◦F, which is too hot and would burn the inside of the oven and its fuse.

So, in order to avoid damaging your gas oven and save yourself the trouble of paying so much money to get it repaired, you should just use baking soda, salt, or other commercial cleaning products to clean your gas oven.

Now You Know the 4 Ways to Clean Your Gas Oven

Cleaning your gas oven prevents potential mishaps and accidents from occurring in the kitchen. While the latest gas ovens do come with a self-cleaning option, you can never be too careful with gas appliances, and it’s always better to stay ahead of such things.

This way, you can avoid the build-up of unpleasant fumes and enhance the lifespan of your trusty old oven.
